Techster Soccer Schedule Released

RUSTON ? A trip to the University of Arkansas Tournament headlines the 2006 schedule for the Louisiana Tech Lady Techster soccer team, according to coach Jen Burns.

The 17-game slate features Louisiana Tech?s first ever game against a Southeastern Conference opponent as the Lady Techsters will face Arkansas Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. while also playing a tough Missouri State team Sept. 10 in the same tournament.

?I wanted to get some games under our belts that would prepare us better for our conference season,? said Burns, who also noted that Arkansas would return the game to Ruston in 2007. ?I think (the non-conference portion) our schedule is a good mix of tough games and some confidence builders. It will definitely be a much more challenging schedule than last year.?

Tech, which returns eight starters and 14 letter winners from last year?s 7-10 team, opens its third year of play Aug. 25 at the Nicholls State Tournament in Thibodaux, facing the Lady Colonels a team the Lady Techsters defeated 7-0 last year.

The remaining non-conference games include Prairie View A&M, Stephen F. Austin, Southern Mississippi, Arkansas, Missouri State, Arkansas State, Southeastern Louisiana, Northwestern State and Centenary.

In all, Tech will play 10 non-conference games and seven Western Athletic Conference contests while playing eight of its games on the brand new fieldturf at Joe Aillet Stadium.

?Playing at the stadium is going to be great,? said Burns, who was Jen Soileau during her first two years as the Tech head coach. ?Our program continues to grow and our facilities have improved every year with our (renovated) locker-room last year and now the new field. It creates a much better atmosphere for our players and our fans.?

Tech, which went 0-7 in WAC games last year, opens conference play Oct. 8 at home against Utah State. Burns said she feels like her team is ready to take another step forward this season and should hopefully be very competitive in all the conference games.

?It seemed like we were in almost every (WAC) game last year,? Burns said. ?I don?t how many times we were only down 1-0 at the half and then had trouble in the second half. I think that had to do with having 10 freshmen on the field. The top six teams make it to the conference tournament and I think we can get in that mix this season.?
