@LATechSOC Battling Mother Nature during Fall Camp
Aug. 11, 2017
RUSTON – Usually during the opening week of fall camp for the Louisiana Tech women’s soccer team, they are having to deal with strong humidity and triple-digit temperatures.
This week of practice has been vastly different with constant rainfall and overcast. Through 10 practice sessions, the squad has spent more than half of those on either the softball or football fields in order to prepare for the season opener which is only one week away.
“It has been frustrating because we can’t get on our field so we are having to use softball and football,” 11th-year head coach Kevin Sherry said. “We are very thankful we can get on their turf. We are really appreciative of that.”
As a result, the itinerary for practices has greatly changed due to the size of the field they have been forced to work with.
“It is putting us behind our schedule with regards to team shape,” Sherry said. “We can do small skill-set areas, but we can’t do the team shape on a big field which is putting us back a little bit. We are just developing our technique. Our technique is getting better, but our game knowledge is a bit below where we need it to be at the moment. Hopefully it will stop raining and we can catch up.”
Also a downfall for not being able to practice at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex much is the coaching staff has not been able to fully evaluate their roster.
Fortunately, there is a lot of experience returning, including nine seniors who have a combined 157 starts between them. Forty-six of those starts have come from defender Haley Laque. Another in that group with a lot of game experience (31 starts) is forward Kailee Hervey who is returning after missing all of last season with a knee injury.
Also looking to play a huge role for this year’s squad is defender Nomvula Kgoale who was one of 11 players selected to the Preseason All-Conference USA Team as well as being chosen as the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
LA Tech is aiming to qualify for its fourth straight conference tournament. That mission begins on Friday, Aug. 18 at McNeese State.
