RUSTON, La. - The Louisiana Tech soccer team plays their second of three games in five days to start the season Sunday at Southern Miss.
The Lady Techsters began the 2011 campaign with a 4-0 victory at home over South Alabama. Freshman Abby Sentz (Kingwood, Texas) came off the bench to score the first two goals of the game on the only shots she took in the match. Also scoring against the Jaguars were senior Brittany Coffinbargar (Springfield, Ill.) and sophomore Taylor Dennis (Albuquerque, N.M.).
USM (0-1) is coming off a 2-0 loss at Ole Miss on Friday night. The Golden Eagles return 20 letterwinners from a team that finished 12th in Conference USA and a 3-14-2 overall record in 2010.
LA Tech head coach Kevin Sherry is not going to take USM lightly even with their record from last season.
"They have more resources, better facilities and we are a small fry compared to them and other schools," Sherry said. "We are expecting a tough game but if we can do well it shows we are punching above our weight, which is what we want to do."
Offensively, sophomore Chelsea Cruthirds returns after leading the Golden Eagles last year in points with eight.
In the net senior Hannah Vanderboegh recorded seven saves against Ole Miss. Vanderboegh had 71 saves last season that was the seventh-best single season performance in Golden Eagle history.
USM leads the overall series 1-0 after a 4-0 victory in 2006 in Hattiesburg, Miss.
