LA Tech Hosts Mississippi State in Home Opener
Aug. 23, 2017
RUSTON – After a grueling three-game road swing in a five-day stretch to open the season, the Louisiana Tech women’s soccer team returns to Ruston for its home opener against Mississippi State on Thursday night at 7 p.m. at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex.
LA Tech (2-0-1) came away from the trip undefeated, beating McNeese State and Incarnate Word each by a score of 1-0 and tying Texas State, 1-1. The defense allowed just one goal in 290 minutes of action while the offense got goals from Jenna Dages, Nomvula Kgoale and Mylene Roy-Ouellet.
“The team has been pushed to its limits physically and mentally with having just played three games on the road in five days,” head coach Kevin Sherry said. “We are about to play our fourth in seven days which is extremely difficult, but our belief is that if we can push the team in the early season then we will see the benefits later on.”
The road trip was capped off by a shutout over Incarnate Word in the first ever meeting between the two teams on the pitch. The back line cleared away six corner kicks and goalkeeper Faith Washington provided the clean sheet in net.
The game-winning goal came from Roy-Ouellet in the 61st minute. It marked the junior striker’s 13th career goal which leads the team.
Meanwhile, this will be the second meeting in the series between LA Tech and Mississippi State (2-0). The first time came in 2014 with the Bulldogs coming out on top, 2-1, in Starkville. Former Lady Techster Kathryn Sloan scored the equalizer early in the second period, but Mississippi State scored what would be the game-winner in the 57th minute.
The Bulldogs, under first-year head coach Tom Anagnost, come into Ruston undefeated, having won two home games versus Stephen F. Austin and Missouri State. A.K. Ward, MaKayla Wadner and Brooke McKee have each scored a goal while Catalina Perez has recorded both victories in net.
“We have never beaten an SEC opponent,” Sherry said. “For that to happen, we will need our players to push through the physical and mental barriers that have been created due to our early tough schedule. Mississippi State is both rested and strong. It will be a huge challenge, but a challenge we are willing and eager to take on.”
This will mark just the second time in program history that LA Tech will host an SEC opponent, but it will be the first time at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex. They played host to Arkansas in 2007, a match that was played inside Joe Aillet Stadium.
Admission is free to the match. The first 250 fans will receive free pizza. There will also be a peach ice cream eating contest at halftime where three contestants will eat their way to the bottom of the bowl. The ice cream will be donated by Mitcham Farms of Ruston.
For those unable to attend, the match will be streamed live on CUSA.TV. Fans can also follow @LATechSOC on Twitter for live in-game updates.
