RUSTON, La. -
Louisiana Tech (1-1) opens their home schedule against a familiar team in Sam Houston State on Friday at 5 p.m. at Lady Techster Soccer Field.
Last season, it was the Bearkats that broke Tech's 11-game winning streak with a 0-0 tie in Huntsville, Texas. Tech should be familiar with SHSU as both return most of their squad with eight of the Bearkat's 11 starters returning.
"We had a really tough game with them last year," head coach Kevin Sherry said. "There were not many chances in the game. Sam Houston State is very physical and quick up front. We expect much of the same as last season."
In the meeting last season, Tech had seven shots on goal while Sam Houston State had six. In the overtime periods, Tech outshot SHSU 7-1, but was still unable to score a goal.
Sherry hopes this year's improving freshman class can continue its impressive production that it has shown so far this season. Freshman Taylor Dennis has scored each of the team's two goals and freshman goalkeeper Caitlin Updyke recorded six saves in a 1-0 win at Lamar on Sunday.
"Caitlin seemed very comfortable and handled pressure very well," Sherry said of Updyke's play. "She communicated well had good poise."
"Taylor is in the right spot at the right time. The team gave her the opportunity to score and she took advantage it."
Sam Houston State enters the match with a record of 0-2 after two 1-0 losses, first at Houston Baptist and then at Houston. In the two games combined, the Bearkats took 16 shots, 10 on goal. Goalkeeper Jenny Pence has given up both goals on the season and has totaled six saves.
On Sunday, Tech hosts Arkansas State at 12 p.m.
