Louisiana Tech's soccer team opens its home season Sunday as the Lady Techsters play host to Mississippi Valley State at 1 p.m. in Joe Aillet Stadium.
Tech stands at 0-1 after falling 3-0 at Northwestern State on Friday, the same day MVSU opened its season with a 3-0 win at Nicholls State.
This is the second season for Tech's soccer program, which went 0-10-2 last year. The quest for that first win is something head coach Jen Soileau knows her team is fighting for.
"Getting that first win, and especially winning our first home game of the season is a big motivational factor," Soileau said. "We really didn't play bad against Northwestern State. We just let out nerves get to us and gave up an early goal, and then gave up those two goals in the second half after dominating the later part of the first half."
Kathleen McCullough led Tech with three shots on goal against NSU while Alex Reinhart and Emily Cleaveland added two each.
Chrissy Haisler had three saves guarding the nets for the Lady Techsters against Northwestern State.
"We didn't get the season opening win we wanted, but I think we picked up some respect from Northwestern State and that helps build confidence," Soileau said. "We started 10 freshman and a senior, so we're young and we're going to get better. We're just hoping to notch that first win in our belts against Mississippi Valley State."
This will be the first meeting between Tech and MVSU. Tech went 0-2-1 against Southwestern Athletic Conference schools last year, tying Arkanasas-Pine Bluff and falling to Grambling State and Jackson State.
