NATCHITOCHES, La. – It wasn’t the end result she was looking for, but Louisiana Tech soccer coach Jen Soileau still liked much of what she saw Friday as her Lady Techsters fell 3-0 Friday at Northwestern State.
An early goal in the opening four minutes and two second-half goals by Julie Zavala in a six-minute span midway through the final period helped the Lady Demons pull away for the win.
NSU jumped to an early lead when senior captain Tara Powasnik scored an unassisted goal from the top of the goalie box just 3:16 into the contest. The score remained unchanged through a hard-fought first half.
“We gave up that early goal playing with four freshmen and one senior,” Soileau said. “That was just nerves. We dominated the rest of the half and had a bunch of close calls on shots on goal. We just couldn’t find the net.”
Zavala put in her first goal 18:28 into the second half, scoring from close range on the left side of the net to double the margin. The junior midfielder netted another shot less than six minutes later, at the 69:02 mark of the game, off an assist from junior forward Marliese Latiolais.
“Overall, even with the loss, I’m pleased with the way we played,” Soileau said. “The players are disappointed because they wanted to win. But we gained experience and if we got to play Northwestern three or four weeks from now, I think it would be a different game.
Louisiana Tech returns to action on Sunday as the Lady Techsters play host to Mississippi Valley State at 1 p.m. in Joe Aillet Stadium.
