Rockwell, Updyke Named WAC Players of the Week
Aug. 27, 2012
RUSTON - After a very successful first week of the season that saw the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters sweep wins against LSU-Shreveport, Southern Miss and Central Arkansas, the Western Athletic Conference today announced LA Tech soccer members Mo Rockwell as Defensive Player of the Week and Caitlin Updyke as Goalkeeper Player of the Week.
Rockwell, a senior defender from Salt Lake City, Utah, started in all three contests and anchored a defensive line that allowed only one goal in all. She helped lead the Lady Techsters to a pair of shutouts on the week with the lone goal given up to Southern Miss that came in the final seconds of the 90th minute. Rockwell also had the lead pass assist for the game-winning goal against Central Arkansas to win 1-0.
This is the first time Rockwell has received WAC Player of the Week honors.
Other defensive nominees included Denver sophomore defender Sam Harder, Idaho junior defender Chelsie Breen, Seattle U defender/midfielder Monuque Escalera and Utah State sophomore defender Taryn Rose.
Updyke, a junior goalkeeper from Broomfield, Colo., registered two shutout wins this past week over LSU-Shreveport and Central Arkansas. Updyke only gave up the one late goal to Southern Miss. She recorded 12 saves total, including nine against Central Arkansas.
This is the third time Updyke has received WAC Player of the Week honors. She was named WAC Player of the Week on Aug. 22 last year for her two shutouts in the opening weekend of games and again on Oct. 3 after shutting out conference member New Mexico State.
Other goalkeeper nominees included Idaho senior goalkeeper Liz Boyden and Utah State freshman goalkeeper Jeannie Woller.
WAC Offensive Player of the Week honors went to Seattle U's sophomore midfielder Taylor Ritzman who scored a hat trick in Sunday's game against Eastern Washington.
Lady Techster freshman forward Laura LeFevour was an offensive nominee for the award.
Louisiana Tech Soccer returns to action tomorrow at Louisiana College in what will be a makeup game for the Murray State cancellation. This match is scheduled to kickoff in Pineville, La. at 3:30 p.m.
