Tech's Soccer Team Records Historic First Win

Louisiana Tech's soccer team made history Sunday as it recorded its first win ever with a 2-0 home victory over Mississippi Valley State.

A Joe Aillet Stadium crowd of 178 erupted in cheers as Tech scored its first goal of the season 45:45 into the contest as Katy Garrison netted one off an assist from Sara Chovanec.

The Lady Techsters added a second goal at the 54:08 mark as Emily Cleaveland blasted a shot into the nets off a pass from Alex Reinhart to give Tech its first program victory after going 0-10-2 last season and dropping its season opener at Northwestern State last Friday.

"It's huge to finally get that first win," Tech coach Jen Soileau "When we finally put in that first goal, our kids relaxed and started doing the things we needed to do to win. It was a big confidence boost."

Mississippi Valley played a slower game than Tech, and for a while the Techsters played into the trap of letting the Devilettes set the pace. But Garrison's goal gave the Techsters an adrenaline surge that allowed Tech to speed up play to the level they like to play."

"We played a lot of players and I think the fresh legs helped," Soileau said. "We let Valley dictate the pace at first, but after that first goal we picked things up."

Tech totaled 14 shots in the contest while holding Mississippi Valley to only three shots.

"I'm so proud of our defense," Soileau said. "They did a great job of keeping Mississippi Valley from taking shots, especially good shots, and it was our defense that really won it for us.

"Offensively our players were good about winning balls out of the air and moving the balls to our forwards. We also used a different formation than we used in our first game, moving a man up top and I think that really helped us."

Louisiana Tech returns to action on Friday when the Techsters play host to Robert Morris at 7 p.m. in Joe Aillet Stadium.
