RUSTON - For the second consecutive week, two Louisiana Tech soccer members were announced by the Western Athletic Conference as Players of the Week; this time the honors went to Heather Fitzgerald as Offensive Player of the Week and Mette Rudolfsen as Defensive Player of the Week.
Fitzgerald, a junior midfielder from Ponchatoula, La., came off the bench at Louisiana College this past Tuesday to score not one, not two but three goals in the second period for the hat trick in an 11-0 win. She became only the eighth Lady Techster ever to record three goals in one contest. The 11 goals was the second most ever scored in a single game by a LA Tech team.
Other offensive nominees included New Mexico State sophomore forward Layla Todd, San Jose State freshman forward Mikaella Meibock, Seattle U sophomore forward/midfielder Stephanie Verdoia, UTSA junior forward Maria Jose Rojas and Utah State junior midfielder Kendra Pemberton.
Rudolfsen, a freshman defender from Aarnes, Norway, started all three games this past week for the Techsters, two of which were shutouts. One of the shutouts came versus Troy where she played all 110 minutes of a double overtime scoreless draw. The lone goal given up by the defense came on a set play in the 82nd minute against Jacksonville State. She was named to the Trojan Classic All-Tournament team for her defensive efforts.
Other defensive nominees included New Mexico State senior defender Courtney Irwin and Utah State sophomore defender Taryn Rose.
WAC Goalkeeper of the Week went to New Mexico State's Mikaela Bitner after recording seven saves in a shutout over Southern Utah. Louisiana Tech freshman goalkeeper Corina Brown was a nominee for the award after making seven saves in her first career start as a Lady Techster.
This is the first time either Tech player has received WAC Player of the Week honors.
