Soccer Wins Third Straight Match With Win Over Centenary
After pummeling Robert Morris by a score of 7-0 Friday night, the Lady Techsters won their third straight match with a 2-0 win over the Centenary Ladies at Joe Aillet Stadium on Sunday.
It took only 11 minutes and 18 seconds for the Lady Techsters (3-1) to get on the board, as freshman Sarah Chovanec scored her first goal of the season with an assist by freshman Emily Cleaveland.
The Lady Techsters dominated the first half, possessing the ball for the majority of the 45 minutes as Tech head coach Jen Soileau commands her team to do.
“We have possessed the ball well the past few games,” Soileau said. “Our defense was tested a little bit more today than in the past couple of games. We bent a little, but we didn’t break. We kept control of the game for the most part and never let a shot hit the back of the net.
“We’re still making mistakes, but fortunately, they haven’t been too costly. We’ve been able to learn from those mistakes without allowing goals. Hopefully we’ll keep progressing on both sides of the ball and be steady by time we begin conference.”
The Lady Techsters continued their physical play in the second half and gained insurance when freshman forward Alex Reinhart scored her first goal of the season at the 64:28 mark.
Of Tech's 11 goals on the season, Reinhart was the ninth player to have scored, and Soileau attributes that statistic to the versatility and strength of every player on her team.
“I’ve always said about this team, what makes us so dangerous is that everyone of our players are capable of scoring,” Soileau said. “We’re not a team of one or two superstars. Everybody can play, and everybody is a threat at any given time. Our opponents can’t concentrate on just one player. It’s a team effort, and everyone of these girls play hard.”
Freshman goal keeper Chrissy Haisler and Tech's defense have not allowed a goal in nearly 300 minutes, as their joint effort marked the Lady Techsters third consecutive shutout win. Haisler went the 90-minute distance and registered three saves, while Tech out shot the Ladies 12-9.
For the Tech coaching staff and two returnees, Laura Williamson and Julie Hadzic, Soileau said starting the season 3-1 is extremely pleasing for them, and fortunately, the rest of the team, they are only continuing to win - like they always have.
“Winning three in a row has been a lot more fun for those who had to endure last year,” Soileau said. “But what has made the turnaround is the simple fact that we have a completely different team. This season is a new start for them. All of these girls come from winning teams and expect to win.”
The Lady Techsters' match against Southeastern, La. has been postponed due to Hurricane Katrina. The match will be rescheduled at a later date. Therefore, Tech's next match will be at Belhaven College in Jackson, Miss. on Sept. 9 at 3 p.m.
