LAFAYETTE, La. - Louisiana Tech head coach Jen Soileau knew her first year Lady Techster soccer team would face quite a challenge in its inaugural contest against UL-Lafayette Friday night.
And although the Lady Techsters fell 6-0 at Cajun Field before 276 fans, Soileau's squad played the much more experienced UL-Lafayette team close for more than half of the game.
Tech held UL-Lafayette scoreless for almost the entire first half. Only a Rose Clemensen goal in the 39th minute of the opening half kept the two teams from entering halftime tied. Clemensen, a 2003 NAIA All-American honorable mention, scored on her goal which was assisted by Kelli Good and Ainlsey Breaux.
Tech goalie Jade Berbert was a key to the Techsters first half play as the junior from Slidell, La., made six saves in the opening 45 minutes of action. On the night, Berbert registered nine saves.
UL-Lafayette pulled away in the second half scoring goals in the 49th and 59th minutes to up their advantage to 3-0. The Cajuns finally wore down Tech, adding three goals in a three minute span just over midway through the second half to register the victory.
The Techsters will face McNeese State Sunday at 2 p.m. in Lake Charles.
