Lady Techsters Travel to Houston to Battle Owls
Sept. 20, 2017
RUSTON – The Louisiana Tech women’s soccer team takes its seven-match unbeaten streak to Houston on Thursday night to battle the Rice Owls at 7 p.m. at Holloway Field.
Since LA Tech’s (8-1-2) lone loss of the season to Mississippi State, they have reeled off six victories and one draw. The last two wins have been of the comeback variety. The Lady Techsters were down a goal at halftime to LSU-Alexandria before scoring three times in the second period to win 3-1.
LA Tech also found itself down a goal against UTSA in the Conference USA opener, but the team rallied by scoring four unanswered goals to take the three points against the Roadrunners. It was the most goals ever scored in a C-USA match for the Lady Techsters and the most in a league match since 2010.
Three goals from this past weekend came from junior striker Mylene Roy-Ouellet who is pacing the team with eight goals. Stepping up in the place of the all-time points leader Kathryn Sloan, Roy-Ouellet is currently tied for fourth in the country in total goals.
She has found the back of the net in seven of the 11 games played so far. Also with multiple goals this fall are sophomore Jenna Dages (four), Nomvula Kgoale (three), Olivia Millington (two), Kailee Hervey (two) and Elizabeth Doll (two).
Junior goalkeeper Courtney Tompkins has settled in nicely in net, registering all three victories from week five to give her a 5-1-1 record with 35 total saves. She currently has a 0.74 goals allowed average.
Rice (4-2-1) was picked second in the preseason poll and is once again among the favorites to challenge for the C-USA regular season and tournament title.
The Owls have been scoring at an incredible rate lately, winning three of the last four matches with goals of four, five and even six which they scored versus Florida Atlantic in their league opener.
They are led offensively by Nia Stallings, Rebecca Keane and Samantha Chaiken who have combined to net 11 of the team’s 21 goals. Chaiken is the reigning C-USA Offensive Player of the Week after netting two goals and an assist against FAU.
In net for the Owls is Maya Hoyer who has started all seven games, registering 27 total saves and two shutouts.
Rice has dominated the all-time series versus LA Tech on the pitch, winning all four meetings, including last year’s match in Ruston by a score of 4-0. Of the 13 league foes for the Lady Techsters, the Owls of Rice and the Charlotte 49ers are the only two teams they have yet to beat.
The match will be streamed live on CUSA.TV ($). Fans can also follow @LATechSOC on Twitter for live in-game updates.
