Game 13 (Southeastern La.)
RUSTON, La. - For the first time in program history, the Louisiana Tech soccer team will face the number one scoring team in the nation when Southeastern Louisiana (4.25 goals per game) comes to Ruston on Sunday for a 2 p.m. kickoff at Lady Techster Soccer Complex. After Friday night's 4-0 win the Lady Techsters are now 6-2-4 on the year. The four goal outburst broke an eight game streak of zero or one goal scored that dates back to the LSU-Shreveport game. Sophomore Taylor Dennis (Albuquerque, N.M.) is leads Tech with nine points and is tied with senior Olivia Lukasewich (Woodbridge, Ontario) and freshman Abby Sentz (Kingwood, Texas) for the most goals with three apiece. Starting all but one game in goal this season has been sophomore Caitlin Updyke (Broomfield, Colo.) She tied for first in the nation with seven shutouts and is ranked national in goals against average (eighth) and save percentage (11th). Credit for Tech's success this season has to be given to the defense which ranks in the top ten national in GAA (6th), save percentage (10th) and shutout percentage (T-10th) entering the weekend. "We have worked very hard on our defensive organization," said head coach Kevin Sherry. "The reason we are still competitive is that our defense has been strong." Southeastern Louisiana SLU has a 6-1-1 record entering Sunday's game and leads the series over LA Tech 2-1. The last meeting between the two schools was in 2007 with the Lions winning 3-1 in Hammond. "Southeastern Louisiana is a really tough game because they are physically very strong and it will be test how we are going to do in October," said Sherry. The number one scoring team in Division I is led by Maiya Cooper's 10 goals and 22 points. Karly Dagys and Lauren Stillians pace SLU with eight assists apiece. Splitting time in goal this season has been Cassie Northup and Jaci Teresinksi with both of them starting four games each. Teresinski is a converted forward and has scored three goals this year before playing between the posts. The Lions are coached by Blake Hornbuckle who is in his 14th season in charge of the program.
