Techsters Fall at Centenary

RUSTON, La. ? The Louisiana Lady Techsters dropped their match on the road at Centenary 2-1 on Wednesday night in a match coach Jennifer Burns said opened her players? eyes.

After taking the lead early in the eighth minute with a goal by Savanna Russo, Tech (4-4-2) allowed two goals in the second half to lose its final nonconference match of the season. Burns said her team slipped back into tendencies it had not done in the last few matches during the loss.

?We came out and got the goal early and we stopped doing the things we know how to do,? Burns said. ?Our defense gets scared whenever someone is fast, and we started getting into old habits I thought we had put behind us.?

Centenary (4-8-0) tied the match when Lauren Stanley scored with a header off a corner kick by Kristine Weaver. The Ladies took the lead with less than five minutes remaining on a goal by Stefani Robbs. Centenary managed the goal after Tech goal keeper Jill Medigovich made a one-on-one save, but Centenary was able to recover the ball and score.

Burns said how Centenary scored should serve as a wake-up call for her players and show them the mistakes they made Wednesday.

?We gave up a goal off a corner kick for the first time in two years. I thought that opened their eyes a little bit,? Burns said. ?We switched formations after the goal. I feel like we dominated the last 30 minutes of the half, but we made some elementary level mistakes that they capitalized on. You can?t do that at this level.?

Tech heads into WAC play next week when the Lady Techsters host Utah State at noon October 8. Burns said she wants to see her team use the loss as a motivator to get ready for conference play and get the program?s first conference win.

?Hopefully, after this loss we?ll be a little bit more focused going into conference play,? Burns said. ?We have 10 days to prepare before we have to play Utah State, so hopefully we can get it cleared up before then.?
