RUSTON, La. - Freshman Taylor Dennis was named the Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday.
The forward from Albuquerque, N.M. (Highland HS), became the sixth Lady Techster in school history to record a hat trick with three goals, all in the second half, in Louisiana Tech's 8-0 victory over Nicholls State on Friday. Dennis is the second LA Tech player to score three goals in a single game this season. Her six points in the victory extended Louisiana Tech's win streak to eight games, the second-longest streak in Tech's seven year history.
"I'm really happy for her," said head coach Kevin Sherry. "She had been struggling lately with her confidence after a great start to the season and so this is a real tonic for her. Supreme goal scorers have supreme confidence and this takes time to build. Taylor scored three great goals, which is impressive in its own right, but even more so when you realize she played part of the game as a defender too. It is well deserved."
San Jose State goalkeeper Meghan Mainwald was named the WAC Defensive Player of the Week.
It is the third weekly WAC award given to a Tech soccer player this season as Caitlin Updyke was named defensive player of the week on Aug. 23 and Rachel King was named offensive player of the week on Sept. 6.
Dennis now has six goals on the season as the Lady Techsters take a 10-2 record into WAC play on Friday as they host Utah State at 4 p.m.
