Tech, Idaho Fight to Scoreless Draw
RUSTON, La. – Louisiana Tech and Idaho were both unable to take advantage of numerous scoring opportunities as the teams fought to a 0-0 tie at Joe Aillet Stadium on Sunday.
It marked the second straight year that the Lady Techsters and Vandals were unable to settle anything through 110 minutes of play. The teams played to a 1-1 tie last season in Moscow, Idaho.
“I thought they were two evenly matched teams,” Tech head coach Kevin Sherry said. “It would have come down to one mistake. Both teams made mistakes, but neither could capitalize on them. I think a tie is a fair result.”
Sophomore goalkeeper Tara Gavlak posted her third shutout of the season and of her career as she made seven saves on the afternoon, five coming in overtime. The game was very physical with a combined 36 fouls between the two teams. Idaho keeper Anna Sandman continues to lead the WAC as she recorded her fifth shutout of the 2007 campaign.
The first half was largely defensive as the teams combined for only five shots. Tech’s best opportunity came in the 43rd minute when Brooke Lanie’s attempt from six yards out missed just wide.
Lanie had another opportunity in the 74th minute but just didn’t get the bounce off the far post.
Tech’s third and probably best chance came in the 109th minute when Kiva Gresham had an open look at the net, but her shot missed the far post by inches.
Idaho outshot the Lady Techsters 14-13 on the day, including a 7-4 edge in shots on goal.
Louisiana Tech will play its first road conference match next weekend as the Lady Techsters travel to Fresno State for a Friday afternoon match. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. CDT.
