Brown, Weng Honored for their Weekend Performances
Oct. 15, 2012
DENVER, Colo. - Louisiana Tech sophomore defender Andrea Weng and goalkeeper Corina Brown were both honored by the Western Athletic Conference this afternoon as Players of the Week for their respected positions after pitching consecutive road shutouts against conference foes Texas State and UTSA.
This is the first such award for each player and they were both well-deserved after their performances from this past weekend helped create some program history.
Weng anchored a LA Tech backline that recorded a 2-0 shutout victory Friday night in San Marcos, Texas against Texas State. The defense only allowed nine shots in her full 90 minutes of action.
The Lady Techsters then made the one hour bus trip to San Antonio, Texas to take on UTSA on Sunday where she helped lead the defense to a second-straight road shutout. This win came in more dramatic fashion as the team played nearly half the match a player down after forward Emily Brennan was issued a red card and was ejected in the 57th minute.
The defense held off the Roadrunners in the second period, forcing the match into overtime where Weng assisted on the game-winning goal to give them the 1-0 victory and the first time ever that LA Tech has won back-to-back conference road games in the same weekend.
Of the nine weeks that the Defensive Player of the Week award has been given, five have gone to LA Tech players. Other defensive nominees included for this past week were New Mexico State senior defender Courtney Irwin, San Jose State freshman defender Rachel Docherty and Utah State sophomore defender Taryn Rose.
Brown was equally stellar on defense in net, recording back-to-back shutouts after registering six saves in the overtime thriller in San Antonio and four more saves in San Marcos. She staved off the Roadrunner offense, despite the player down, to give the Lady Techster offense a chance at the victory. Her defense was critical against the 13 total corner kicks she faced from the combined matches.
Brown now joins fellow goalkeeper Caitlin Updyke as LA Tech players honored as Goalkeeper of the Week. Other goalkeeper nominees included New Mexico State junior Jessica Schutter and Utah State senior Ashlyn Mulford for this past week.
The defense now has recorded 11 shutouts on the season, already surpassing the most shutouts in the season which was previously 10 done in 2008. As a result, the LA Tech backline has only allowed five goals all season which is tops in the WAC.
The Lady Techsters will look to extend their 10-game unbeaten streak this Friday when they play host to Seattle at 4 p.m.
