HATTIESBURG - Louisiana Tech split a pair of games in the opening day of the 2012 Gold Pub and Grill Classic hosted by Southern Mississippi as the Lady Techsters defeated Mississippi Valley State 7-5 and fell to Nicholls State 5-2.
Tech 7, Mississippi Valley State 5
Tech opened the day by exploding for six runs in the second inning against Mississippi Valley State and then held on for the win, snapping the Delta Devils three-game winning streak which includes victories over Memphis and Southern Miss.
Erin Kipp (1-2) picked up her first win of the year, working 5.0 innings while allowing five runs - three earned - on five hits and five walks while striking out one. Mel Goff (1) picked up her first save of the year in relief, allowing only one hit and one walk over the final 2.0 innings.
Tech took an early 6-0 lead when the Lady Techsters scored six times on five hits in the bottom of the second inning. Katelynn Hill doubled to lead the frame off and then scored on a one-out single by catcher Alayna Kipp. After Erin Kipp singled and Kendra Harmon walked to load the bases, Amanda Krueger doubled to left center, plating two more runs and upping the lead to 3-0.
Janna Frandrup then doubled to right center, driving home two runs - her 11th and 12th RBI of the season and giving Tech a 5-0 lead. Dacia Hale finished the scoring with an RBI single, scoring pinch runner Charday Wilson and pushing the advantage to 6-0.
The lead remained 6-0 until the top of the fourth inning when an error, four walks and two hits led to a four-run frame for Mississippi Valley State as the lead was cut to 6-4.
Erin Kipp surrendered a solo home run in the top of the fifth for the final run of the game.
Nicholls State 5, LA Tech 2
Tech was six outs away from its second win of the day but a five-run sixth inning by Nicholls State proved to be too much to overcome.
The Lady Techsters took a 1-0 advantage in the top of the third inning on a two-out, RBI double by Kendra Harmon which scored Mel Goff from first base for the first run of the game.
Tech's lead remained 1-0 until the top of the fifth inning when the Goff-Harmon combo struck again. With two outs, Goff singled through the right side and then scored on an RBI triple by Harmon down the right field line, making the score 2-0.
Goff was cruising in the circle until the sixth inning when Nicholls State scored five runs on five hits and one walk as six straight runners reached base to begin the inning. Janna Frandrup came on in relief and surrendered a double before retiring three straight batters to get out of the frame.
Tech had a chance in the top of the seventh as Dacia Hale doubled and Cassie Krieg walked to put runners on first and second. Two outs later, Goff walked to load the bases for Harmon. However, the senior struck out for only the second time all year to end the game.
Harmon (2 hits, 2 RBI), Frandrup (1 hit), Hale (1 hit), Alayna Kip (1 hit) and Goff (1 hit, 2 runs) led Tech offensively.
The Lady Techsters return to action Sunday with an 8 a.m. contest against IUPUI and a 1 p.m. game against Southern Miss.
