RUSTON - Freshman Meghan Knowles three-run home run sent Centenary home early as Louisiana Tech downed the Ladies 9-1 in five innings at the Lady Techsters Softball Complex Wednesday evening.
"Meghan is always hitting the ball hard," said Tech head coach Sarah Dawson. "Even in batting practice, she might be off a couple of pitches but then she makes adjustments and gets herself going. She's been consistent for us early this season. I can't think of an at bat where she hasn't hit the ball hard. She works hard every day, and it's nice to see her be successful."
After junior hurler Meghan Krieg set down Centenary in order in the top of the first inning, the Lady Techsters jumped out offensively as leadoff hitter Kendra Harmon hit her second home run of the year - and of her entire softball playing career - over the right field fence to give LA Tech a 1-0 lead.
One out later, Amberly Waits reached on an error and scored on a Jessica Kirby double down the leftfield line, upping the advantage to 2-0. Kirby then scored on a Knowles double to make the score 3-0.
Tech added three more runs in the bottom of the second inning as Claire Gibson singled to lead the frame off and then advanced to second when Sarah Offutt drew a walk. After Harmon advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt, the duo scored on a fielding error by the Centenary right fielder on a ball hit by Kylie Bassett as the score increased to 5-0.
Centenary (4-7) scored a lone run in the top of the third inning as the Ladies recorded their only three hits of the game in the frame, including an RBI single by Haley Bassett.
"We got a lot of people some playing time which was a nice luxury to have with lead from beginning," Dawson said. "It allows us to keep people fresh while also giving some younger players some at bats and some work on defense."
Tech put the game away in the bottom of the fifth with Knowles three-run shot.
Krieg (5-4) picked up the win, allowing only one run on three hits and no walks while striking out 10 batters in the complete-game victory.
"Meghan really threw well tonight," Dawson said. "She hit her spots and it was good to see her throw with the control we know she has. She has probably been a little frustrated with the walks she's been allowing so it was good to see her have a solid outing."
Knowles led Tech with a career-high three hits and four RBI.
Tech travels to Auburn, Alabama this weekend to compete in the War Eagle Classic Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
