March 11, 2018
MURFREESBORO, Tennessee – Lexi Cushing hit a two-run home run and two-run double to lead Middle Tennessee to a 4-1 win over Louisiana Tech in the series finale in Conference USA action Sunday morning.
Tech (12-13, 2-1) led 1-0 on the strength of an opposite field solo home run by Morgan Turkoly in the top of the first inning. However, singles by Taria Page, Bayli Simon and Addison Roark were the only other hits of the game for Tech against Middle Tennessee starter Amber Baldwin.
Freshman Jensen Howell worked a scoreless three innings in the circle after getting the start for Tech before the Blue Raiders (17-8, 1-2) finally got to her in the bottom of the fourth.
Morgan Harris doubled and then Cushing followed with a two-run shot deep over the centerfield fence giving the Blue Raiders a 2-1 lead.
Tech drew a pair of walks in the fifth inning but stranded both runners.
Cushing struck again in the bottom of the fifth inning. This time she drilled a full-count, two-out pitch to the left centerfield wall off Tech reliever Preslee Gallaway upping the Blue Raiders advantage to 4-1.
Roark singled with two outs in the top of the seventh for Tech, but Jazlyn Crowder then lined out to the MT third baseman for the final out of the game.
Tech won the series after sweeping Saturday’s doubleheader by scores of 2-1 and 7-1, marking the 11th series win by the Lady Techsters in their last 14 conference series dating back to 2016.
The Lady Techsters will return to action Wednesday when they host LSU-Alexandria at 6 p.m. Tech will host FIU next weekend in a three-game C-USA series.
