UTEP 11, LA Tech 6 (Game 1)
UTEP pounded out 16 hits and took advantage of seven Louisiana Tech errors to defeat the Lady Techsters 11-6 in the first game of the doubleheader.
The Miners wasted little time in taking the lead, scoring five runs in the first inning off of Tech starter Bianca Duran. UTEP used five hits and one error to take the first inning advantage.
Tech countered in the bottom of the second frame, scoring six runs on three hits, two walks and one error. After Alayna Kipp walked and Katelynn Hill singled, Erin Kipp drove home the first run with an RBI single up the middle, scoring pinch runner Courtney Lowe.
Anna Cross then drove home the second run with a fielder's choice ground ball in which the Miners failed to record an out. Duran followed with a two-run double to left field, scoring three more runs as UTEP committed a fielding error on the throw back to the infield that allowed the tying run to score. Tech then took its only lead of the day on a sacrifice fly RBI by Pauline Tufi, scoring Duran from third.
UTEP added two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to pull away for the win.
Duran (3-11) took the loss, allowing 11 runs - six earned - on 16 hits and one walk in 7.0 innings of action.
Duran (2-4, 1 run, 2 RBI), Erin Kipp (2-3, 1 run, 1 RBI), and Hill (2-4, 1 run) each recorded multiple hits while Kristen Miles (1-1, 1 run), Katelynn Cook (1-1), Cross (1 run, 1 RBI), Tufi (1 RBI), and Natalie Moran (1-1) all contributed offensively.
UTEP 12, LA Tech 3 (5 innings - Game 2)
In the second game of the day, UTEP put up crooked numbers in the first, third and fifth frames to run away with a 12-3 victory.
For the second straight game, the Miners bats were hot as UTEP recorded 15 hits, including six extra base hits off of Tech pitcher Pauline Tufi.
UTEP used a two-out double and a two-run home run in the top of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead over the Lady Techsters. Tech countered in the bottom of the frame as Erin Kipp singled, stole second base and scored on Tufi's RBI double down the left field line.
The come-back was short-lived as UTEP exploded for five runs on six hits in the top of the third inning, the big blow being a grand slam home run by M Montiel as the lead increased to 8-2.
The Lady Techsters had an opportunity in the bottom of the third inning to get back into the game. Erin Kipp singled in front of walks by Duran and Tufi to load the bases and Kipp scored on throwing error on a ground ball by Winter back to the circle. However, UTEP then turned a double play as flied out and Duran was gunned home at the plate trying to score. Alayna Kipp then lined out to right field to end the threat.
UTEP put the game away in the top of the fifth inning, scoring four runs on five hits.
Tufi (5-3) took the loss, allowing 12 runs - 11 earned - on 15 hits and five walks while striking out three.
