Final Stats

RUSTON, La. - A five-run second inning for the Demons was too much to overcome as Louisiana Tech fell to Northwestern State, 9-4, on Wednesday night at the Lady Techster Softball Complex.

Northwestern State (14-14) pushed across five runs in the second inning and one in the third for a 6-0 lead over LA Tech (11-21) after two and a half innings of play. Despite the Techsters plating four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the lead to two, Northwestern State tacked on three additional runs in the top of the seventh to complete the victory for the Demons.

Skylar Cagle (4-4) earned the win for Northwestern State after holding Tech scoreless through two innings with a walk and strikeout. Shelby Sells pitched just an inning for the Demons, allowing four earned runs on four hits in 0.1 innings. Baylee Gray pitched the final 4.2 innings, while giving up four hits and striking out six Tech batters.

Pauline Tufi (7-6) was charged with the loss for LA Tech after giving up six runs - three earned - on five hits with six strikeouts in three innings of work. Biana Duran pitched the final four innings of the game, while allowing three runs on two hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

Two LA Tech errors in the second opened the doors for the Demons to score three unearned runs, including a two runs home run to left field by Kellye Kincannon. Two more runs in the inning and one in the third helped give Northwestern State a six-run advantage early in the game.

In the bottom half of the third, Katelynn Hill led off with a walk and Tech then loaded the bases on back-to-back singles by Erin Kipp and Kristen Miles. Duran then came through with a two RBI double to left field. Janine Godwin followed up with an RBI single to score one, while Anna Cross knocked home the fourth and final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to right field.

That would be all the offense Louisiana Tech could generate, while Northwestern State pulled away in the final frame, stretching the lead to five runs to earn the victory.

The Lady Techsters were led by Godwin, who recorded two hits, a double and an RBI. Erin Kipp also had two singles and scored a run at the top of the lineup. Louisiana Tech out-hit Northwestern State, 9-7, in the loss, but could not manage to push across runs in the end.

Kincannon hit two home runs in the game that drove home a total of three runs to help power the Demon bats. She was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Brittany Virgoe was also 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI.

Louisiana Tech's next action comes Saturday when the Lady Techsters face off with Florida Atlantic in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. at the Lady Techster Softball Complex.
