RUSTON - Louisiana Tech freshman Anna Cross threw a run-rule shortened one-hit shutout as the Lady Techsters defeated Northwestern State 8-0 in five innings Wednesday night in Ruston.
"This is the first game that we really saw (our team) act like sharks when there was blood in the water," said Tech head coach Mark Montgomery. "When the other team made mistakes we capitalized on it. I thought we played well in all aspects of the game tonight."
Cross (2-2) had a perfect game through the first four innings before NSU catcher Cassandra Barefield roped a single to left field to lead off the top of the fifth. However, Cross worked around a fielding error and registered three straight outs as she picked up her second win of the season.
"Anna showed some greatness in Las Cruces (this past weekend) and I probably should have ridden her a little longer when things went against her," Montgomery said. "She has really matured throughout the season. I couldn't be more proud of her growth and development to this point."
After Cross worked a perfect first inning, Louisiana Tech (14-15) capitalized on some early miscues by the Demons (24-7) to take a 4-0 lead after one.
Amanda Krueger was hit by a pitch to lead the bottom half of the frame off and then scored the first run of the game when Kristen Miles hit a routine grounder to NSU third baseman Brittany Virgoe who threw the ball past her second baseman and all the way to centerfield.
Erin Kipp then followed with a single when her infield popup was fielded by NSU pitcher Kaylee Guidry, who was then plowed over by her own first baseman, allowing Kipp to reach first.
Melanie Goff then followed with an RBI single as Kipp was thrown out trying to advance to third. With Tech leading 2-0, Janna Frandrup singled deep in the hole at shortstop, scoring Goff from third with the third run of the inning. Meghan Knowles singled and Dacia Hale walked to load the bases.
After Baylee Gray came on in relief of Guidry, Anna Cross drew a bases loaded walk to drive home the fourth run of the game.
Tech added to its lead in the bottom of the second inning as Miles singled and then scored on a one-out double by Goff to left centerfield. Alayna Kipp followed with an RBI single to centerfield and eventually scored on a fielding error by Virgoe on third.
The Lady Techsters added their final run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. After two quick outs, Miles and Erin Kipp both singled and then Goff registered her third straight run-scoring hit - a double - to plate Miles and give LA Tech an 8-0 lead.
Offensively, Tech was led by Goff (3-3, 2 runs, 3 RBI), Miles (2-3, 3 runs), Erin Kipp (2-3), Alayna Kipp (1-3, 1 run, 1 RBI), Janna Frandrup (1-3, 1 run, 1 RBI), Knowles (1-3), Krueger (1 run) and Cross (1 RBI).
Cross picked up the win, allowing only one hit and no walks while striking out a career-high five batters in 5.0 innings of action.
The Lady Techsters will return to action this weekend when they host UT Arlington in a three-game series in Ruston. Due to the weather forecast for Saturday, the schedule has changed for the series as Friday will consist of a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. with Saturday's single game slated for 1 p.m.
