Calapp, Simon Lead @LATechSB to Win

RUSTON, La. – Louisiana Tech infielders Bayli Simon and Berkley Calapp each drove home four runs and freshman Erin McDonald recorded eight strikeouts in her first collegiate start lifting the Lady Techsters to a 13-1 win over Grambling State Wednesday.
Simon recorded a two-run single in the second and a two-run home run in the fourth while Calapp added a pair of two-run singles in each of the same two innings to lead an 11-hit attack by the Lady Techsters (20-17).
McDonald, making her first collegiate start and only her second appearance of the season, allowed just one run on five hits and one walk while striking out eight over 5.0 innings of action. The Norman, Oklahoma native registered multiple strikeouts in three innings and at least one in all five frames.
Tech plated one run in the first, five in the second, one in the third and six more in the fourth in run-ruling the Lady Tigers (8-20). The 13 runs are the most by LA Tech in a game this season.
Freshman Sloane Stewartson registered a 3-for-3 performance at the plate, including a solo home run in the third inning – a line drive over the left field wall. The home run was her third of the season.
Jazlyn Crowder was 2-for-2 at the plate and recorded two of Tech’s eight stolen bases in the game to give her 17 for the season. Katie Smith (2), Kimmie Atienza (3) and Morgan Turkoly all recorded steals in the win while Turkoly extended her streak of consecutive games reaching base safely to 23 games with a walk in the second inning.
Tech returns to action Saturday with a doubleheader at Charlotte at 12 p.m. CT in Conference USA action.
