Utah State's Kate Greenough pitched a three-hitter to lead the Aggies to a 2-1 win over Louisiana Tech in the second game of a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader Friday.
Greenough outdueled Lady Techster starter Krissi Oliver (9-13), who took the loss despite allowing only two runs on six hits in the complete-game performance.
Utah State got to Oliver early, plating a run in the first inning and the second inning as both came on clutch two-out singles by the Aggies.
Jasmine Harris lined a single up the middle and into centerfield with two outs in the bottom of the first inning to score Nicole Rupp and give the Aggies a 1-0 lead. Utah State added onto the advantage in the bottom of the second inning as Megan McDonald's bloop single to right field scored a run.
Tech outfielder Lindsey McIlwain saved a third run from scoring on the play as she threw out Gina Rawls on the play.
Tech finally mounted a scoring opportunity in the sixth inning. With two outs, Danielle Sheridan walked and then scored on a double by Waits off the left field fence making the score 2-1.
After a wild pitch allowed Waits to advance to third, Kylie Bassett hit a deep fly ball to right field that was caught for the third and final out of the frame.
Greenough (6-7) retired Tech in order in the seventh to preserve the win.
The two teams return to action at 1 p.m. CST Saturday.
