FRESNO - Three early errors were too much to overcome as Fresno State scored four unearned runs in the first two innings to down Louisiana Tech 4-0 in Western Athletic Conference softball action Friday night at Bulldog Diamond.
Fresno State improved to 32-20 on the season, 12-5 in WAC play, while LA Tech fell to 22-30 overall, 7-11 in league action. The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday starting at 3 p.m.
"Errors in the first two innings compounded by walks didn't help our situation," said head coach Sarah Dawson. "We fell behind early and dug ourselves some tough holes. I thought we did a descent job at the plate. (Michelle) Moses is a great pitcher. We made good contact and put the ball in play. We just need to put a better quality ball in play. We had too many pop ups. We made her work in the strike zone. Our defense has to be better."
Fresno State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, scoring three unearned runs on two hits, two walks and one costly LA Tech error. Vonnie Martin drove home the first run with a bases loaded walk and then Andrea Ortega registered a two-run single.
The Bulldogs added a solo run in the bottom of the second inning on one hit, two walks and two errors. Moses registered an RBI single in the inning to drive home the fourth run of the game.
After a shaky first two frames, Tech starter Michelle Jones settled down, allowing only two hits and one walk over the final 4.0 innings of action.
However, Moses was equally impressive for the Bulldogs, scattering four hits and one walk while striking out six in the complete-game performance.
