RUSTON - Fresh off of being named the Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year, Louisiana Tech's Anna Cross showed why on Wednesday night leading the Lady Techsters to a 1-0 victory over UT Arlington at the 2013 WAC Tournament.
Cross started in the circle for the Lady Techsters and pitched 4.2 innings of scoreless ball while allowing only two singles and two walks. Although she left with two outs in the top of the fifth inning of a scoreless game and didn't factor in the decision in the circle, Cross definitely made her presence felt in other ways.
With UT Arlington pitcher Teri Lyles matching the LA Tech staff with zeros in the run column, Cross decided to take things into her own hands offensively in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Cross Roads, Texas native beat out a ground ball to shortstop for an infield single - one of only three hits in the game by Tech against Lyles.
On the very next pitch, Cross stole her 20th base of the season to move to second and then moved to third base on a ground ball out by Amanda Krueger to shortstop. Following an ground ball out by Kristen Miles for the second out of the frame, Cross scored on a wild pitch by Lyles to give Tech the 1-0 lead.
It was all the Lady Techsters would need as Michelle Jones and Melanie Goff combined to allow only one hit and one walk over the final 2.1 innings of action in the circle. Jones picked up her 13th win of the year, allowing one hit in 1.2 innings of work.
Golf picked up her fourth save of the season by getting the final two outs in the seventh. However, the save didn't come without a scare. UT Arlington opened the frame when Rachel Forshaw reached on a throwing error by Cross at shortstop.
On the next batter, Krueger made the defensive play of the night for Tech as sophomore catcher Alayna Kipp fielded a bunt by Rebecca Stokes and threw it into the dirt at first base. However, Krueger who was covering the base on the play, dug it out to record the out and prevent the ball from going into right field.
With a runner on second and one out, Goff took over for Jones in the circle and promptly walked Taylor Zink on four pitches to put runners on first and second. However, Goff then got leadoff batter Britni Barilli to fly out to left field for the second out and then got second baseman Kallan Thompson to ground to shortstop where Jones fielded the ball and flipped it to Hailey Winter at third for the third and final out.
Offensively, Tech was led by Janna Frandrup and Goff with doubles and Cross with the single, stolen base and run scored.
With the win, Tech advances to face No. 2 seed New Mexico State Thursday at 2 p.m. in the winners bracket while UT Arlington fell to the losers bracket and will play at 7 p.m. Fans can listen to the Lady Techsters game against the Aggies on ESPN 97.7 FM with the pregame show starting at 1:45 p.m.
