RUSTON - Louisiana Tech received two solid pitching performances from seniors Janna Frandrup and Michelle Jones to lead the Lady Techster softball team to a 7-0 and 12-0 doubleheader sweep over Northeast Texas Community College Saturday at the Lady Techster Softball Complex.
Jones allowed only four hits and one walk while striking out eight in her complete-game performance in game No. 1 of the day while the Lady Techster offense used a six-run fourth inning to blow open a scoreless game.
Freshman Kristen Miles led the fourth off with a single and advanced to second on a ground out by Mel Goff before scoring in front of Alayna Kipp's RBI triple, giving Tech the 1-0 lead. One out later, Dacia Hale doubled to plate a run. After Jones drew a two out walk and Hailey Winter was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Amanda Krueger hit a bases-clearing double to increase the lead to 5-0. Krueger then scored on an RBI single by Miles as Tech sent 11 batters to the plate in the frame.
LA Tech added a solo run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Winter walked and eventually scored on an error by Northeast Texas CC.
"It took the team a while to get going," said first year LA Tech head coach Mark Montgomery. "Michelle was fantastic. She was in great command the whole game with such a good mix of pitches. We were solid defensively, with really only one error and some very good plays."
In the second game of the day, Frandrup was even more impressive in the circle as the senior allowed only two hits and no walks while striking out three in the victory.
Offensively, Tech scored in four of their six frames, including exploding for eight runs in the fourth inning.
The Lady Techsters jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first as Goff led off with a double and scored on a ground out by Alayna Kipp. Tech added onto its lead in the second as Hale walked, stole second and then scored on Cassie Krieg's RBI double. Two batters later, Krieg scored on Goff's run-scoring single as Tech led 3-0.
After a scoreless third inning, the Lady Techsters plated eight runs on five hits and two errors in the bottom of the fourth inning. Goff provided a two-run double, Miles an RBI single and Courtney Lowe a two-run double as Tech pushed its advantage out to 11-0.
The final run of the game scored in the fifth inning as Frandrup doubled and pinch runner Erin Kipp eventually came around to score on a fielding error by Northeast Texas CC.
Goff led Tech with three hits, three RBI and one run. Frandrup (2 hits), Miles (1 hit, 1 run, 1 RBI), Janine Godwin (1 hit, 2 runs), Lowe (1 hit, 1 run, 2 RBI) and Krieg (2 hits, 1 run, 1 RBI) were Tech's other top offensive producers.
"It was a well-pitched game by Janna," Montgomery said. "She had good control and made them hit her pitches. Our hitting was more relaxed. The girls did a good job of hitting the ball where it was pitched."
Tech will host Bossier Parish Community College in a doubleheader starting Saturday at noon in its final games of the fall season. Admission is free.
