RUSTON – Morgan Turkoly hit two-out, solo home run over the right field fence in the bottom of the seventh inning Saturday to help Louisiana Tech stave off its first loss of the fall season against Tyler Junior College.
Tech trailed 1-0 and was down to its final out when Turkoly recorded her third hit of the game, sending the first pitch she saw over the wall. Tech and Tyler eventually ended the game tied 2-2 after eight innings.
Head coach Mark Montgomery’s team defeated Louisiana College 8-0 in the second game of the day to improve to 4-0-1 on the fall.
Tyler JC took an early 1-0 lead on a run-scoring double in the top of the first inning against Lady Techster starter Krystal De La Cruz, who pitched 7.0 innings, allowing one run on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts. De La Cruz allowed only one hit over the final five innings of action.
Offensively, Tech had numerous opportunities to score before Turkoly’s blast, but stranded nine runners in the game, including five in scoring position. Turkoly led Tech offensively with three hits while Jazlyn Crowder added two hits. Addison Roark, Sloane Stewartson and Kimmie Atienza each registered one hit.
Using the international tiebreaker rule in the eighth inning, Tyler JC plated a run off Tech reliever Bailey Allen to take a 2-1 advantage. However, in the bottom of the eight, Stewartson roped a double down the left field line, scoring Ali Galaz with the tying run.
In the second game of the day, Preslee Gallaway spearheaded a strong pitching performance by three Tech hurlers in the 8-0 win over LC. Gallaway pitched a perfect 4.0 innings, striking out seven before giving way to freshman Erin McDonald and sophomore Jenny Chapman. McDonald tossed 2.0 innings, allowing two hits while striking out one, and Chapman followed with one inning of one-hit ball with three Ks.
Offensively, the Lady Techsters were led by Taria Page (2-2, 2 RBI), Baylie Simon (1-2, 1 run, 2 RBI, 2 SB), Marilyn Rizzato (1-2, 1 run, 1 RBI), Stewartson (1-2, RBI), Atienza (1-4, RBI), Turkoly (1-3, run), Crowder (1-3, 2 runs), Roark (2-4, run), Katie Smith (1-3, run), Galaz (RBI, SB), Emily Daniel (2 SB), and Sydney Casteel (run).
Tech returns to action Friday when it hosts Northwestern State at 5:30 p.m.
