RUSTON - Louisiana Tech was picked fifth in the Western Athletic Conference preseason Softball Coaches' Poll released by the league office on Tuesday.
Head coach Mark Montgomery and Co. return 12 letter winners and eight starters from last year's squad that finished 25-33 overall and sixth in the WAC standings.
With the departure of annual WAC powers Fresno State, Hawaii and Nevada, this year's league has a totally new look as LA Tech, San Jose State, New Mexico State and Utah State welcome conference newcomers Texas State, UTSA, UT Arlington and Seattle to form the eight-team league.
Texas State, which captured the Southland Conference title last year, edged out San Jose State as the WAC preseason favorite as the Bobcats picked up five first place votes and 43 total points while the Spartans earned two first place votes and 42 points.
New Mexico State, which failed to qualify for the WAC Tournament last season, totaled 39 points followed by UTSA (30 points), LA Tech (22), Utah State (20), UT Arlington (15) and Seattle (13).
"I don't give any poll too much validity," said Montgomery. "Every opponent is worth our greatest effort. Polls are great for spawning discussion, but we always want to roll out the ball and play the game. The goal is to be ranked the highest at the end of the season."
Goff earned first team all-WAC honors as a junior after batting .409 with 14 doubles, two home runs, 28 runs scored and 23 RBI. Jones was 15-16 in the circle for the Lady Techsters with a 2.86 earned run average.
