2016 LA Tech Softball Preview: Pitchers
Feb. 10, 2016
RUSTON, La. - In the circle Louisiana Tech has big shoes to fill with the departure of Bianca Duran, but the Lady Techsters are up for the challenge.
Sophomore Bailey Allen turned heads as a freshman as she took Conference USA by storm. Allen posted 2.61 earned run average and struck out 58 batters in 69 innings.
"Bailey had a great season last year," head coach Mark Montgomery said. "She is very strong and made the Conference USA All-Freshman team. It is going to be a little harder this year, because Bailey is going to have to throw against the ones. She is going to have to learn how to be good, even when she does not have her best stuff. That is the challenge for Bailey this season."
The Lady Techsters also return sophomore Carolina Sanchez. Sanchez could not have started her career on a better note than 6.1 innings of no-hit softball, striking out eight Arkansas-Pine Bluff batters in the process during her collegiate debut.
"Carolina really worked hard this summer," Montgomery said. "She had an amazing fall. She threw well against good teams. She is doing a good job of keeping the ball down. She has really worked hard and we are really pleased with what she has brought to the table."
Pauline Tufi may also see time on the mound. Last season the junior posted a 3.24 era, with 59 strikeouts. Over the course of the offseason Tufi has been hard at work developing new pitches in an attempt to keep opposing hitters off balance at the plate.
"She has had to learn new pitches over the past year," Montgomery said. "Mike has been working with her to improve on those pitches, but it just takes time for those pitches to develop and be at the level they need to be."
Fans will see a new face pitching for Louisiana Tech this spring. Freshman Preslee Gallaway will log major innings for Lady Techsters right out of the gate. The young pitcher from Pilot Point, Texas has blown the coaching staff away with her development in the circle.
"Preslee has a lot of potential," Montgomery said. "Mike Forsythe, our pitching coach, has done a great job of bringing her along at the right pace. He has built her up working with not only her mechanics, but her mentality. Her improvement has been through the roof; off the charts. When we recruited her, we were not sure she would pitch a lot, but she has improved so much that we are comfortable with her and she will pitch. She not only brings the ability to pinch hit, but she has the ability to pitch as well."
