Tech Sweeps Alcorn State in Season Openers
RUSTON ? Louisiana Tech received a strong pitching performance from freshman Mandi Bertsch and some timely hitting from Ashley Cameron and Amberly Waits to sweep a softball doubleheader from Alcorn State 8-4 and 5-1 Saturday afternoon at the Lady Techster Softball Complex.
?It was a good place for us to start, but there are still some areas we need to work on,? said Tech head coach Sarah Dawson. ?We had too many pop ups and didn?t do a good job of hitting hard line drives. We did a much better job in the second game of hitting the ball hard, we were just a little unlucky on the base paths.?
Bertsch (1-0) picked up the win in game No. 2 of the day with a complete-game one-hitter, allowing only a leadoff single to Melissa Mason before shutting down the Lady Braves the rest of the way.
After Alcorn State took an early 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the top of the first inning against Bertsch, Tech responded by scoring twice in their half of the frame. Emma Barnes opened the inning with a single and scored on Danielle Sheridan?s single to left field, making the score 1-1.
Sheridan then gave Tech a 2-1 lead scoring on a Kylie Bassett RBI groundout.
Tech added one run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a bases loaded walk to Waits. The Techsters increased the lead to 5-1 with a two-run home run by Bassett over the left field fence in the bottom of the fifth inning, her first collegiate blast.
Bertsch kept the Lady Braves at bay, allowing only the one hit and four walks while striking out four.
?I was really happy with how Mandi performed,? Dawson said. ?She had some control issues but to come out in her first collegiate game and toss a one-hitter was iimpressive.?
Emma Barnes led Tech with two hits while Bassett recorded three RBI in the win.
Tech opened the day with a 8-4 win over Alcorn State in the first game of the doubleheader thanks to long balls from Cameron and Waits.
After picking up single runs in the first and second innings and holding a slim 2-1 lead, Cameron blasted a three-run home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the third to give the Lady Techsters a 5-1 advantage.
Alcorn State fought back in the top of the fourth inning with three runs on two hits and one error, cutting the Techster advantage to 5-4.
Waits scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth inning to make it a 6-4 lead, and then the freshman from Cleburne, Texas, blasted a tape-measured two-run home run over the right field wall in the fifth to give the Lady Techsters an 8-4 lead.
Krissi Oliver (1-0) picked up the win for Tech, allowing four runs ? three earned ? on seven hits and three walks while striking out nine in the complete game victory.
Waits and Rochelle Sandberg each registered three hits while Cameron added two.
Tech and Alcorn State will complete the three-game series Sunday at 2 p.m.
