Tech Softball Hosts Lions Wednesday
Feb. 14, 2012
RUSTON - After an impressive showing down in Baton Rouge this past weekend, Louisiana Tech returns home to host Southeastern Louisiana in a softball doubleheader Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Lady Techster Softball Complex.
The home games will be a rarity for LA Tech during the first month of the season as the Lady Techsters play 27 of their first 29 contests away from Ruston.
Tech opened its challenging non-conference schedule this past weekend as it defeated Penn State, an NCAA Tournament team from a year ago, 4-2 while it dropped a pair of one-run decisions (5-4, 7-6) to 15th ranked Michigan.
Head coach Sarah Dawson's young team - which includes seven newcomers and 14 of 19 players on the roster who are in only their first or second year with the program - showed great promise over the weekend against three NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago.
As a team, Tech batted .222 against top-notch arms as the Lady Techsters were led by Janna Frandrup (.556, 4 RBI), Amanda Krueger (.400, 4 runs) and Katelynn Hill (.364, 3 HR, 4 RBI). Maybe the most impressive statistic for Tech was the fact they only struck out a total of 12 times in those four games as the Lady Techsters posted quality at bats all weekend.
In the circle, Tech had plenty of bright spots from its three starters, including a complete-game performance by Michelle Jones in a 4-2 win over Penn State. Junior Mel Goff also was solid in the circle against the potent offensive lineup of Michigan, throwing nine innings against the Wolverines while allowing only five runs.
Southeastern Louisiana comes into the games having won only one out of five games this past weekend in their own tournament with a victory over Northern Illinois and losses to Kansas, Southern, Akron and Northern Colorado.
