@LATechSB to Face Defending National Champion OU

March 3, 2014

NORMAN, Okla. - Louisiana Tech head coach Mark Montgomery didn't shy away from competition when making out the 2014 Lady Techsters softball schedule.

Having already played four games against Top 25 teams this year, the Lady Techsters will turn their attention to defending national champion and 13th-ranked Oklahoma Tuesday at 3 p.m. weather permitting.

Tech (8-10) made the bus trip to Norman late Saturday night following its 5-3 win over Stephen F. Austin in the final game of the Wooo Pig Fastpitch Classic in Fayetteville, beating the winter storm that blanketed the middle and southern portion of the country Sunday.

Lady Techster head coach Mark Montgomery said Monday afternoon that after being stuck at the hotel all Sunday due to road conditions, the team was able to practice at OU's indoor facility and also get some additional exercise in the University's intramural complex on Monday.

"I can tell you that Oklahoma coach Patty Gasso and their entire facilities staff is doing everything possible to attempt to get the field ready for the game," Montgomery said. "They worked on it as much as they could today to remove ice and snow from the tarp. The high tomorrow is going to be around 42, but the challenge will be the ice on the outfield. We will just have to wait and see. I do appreciate their effort to get the field ready to play."

The game is a homecoming for Tech assistant coach Jeannie (Douglas) Murphy, who played for the Sooners from 2006 through 2009, helping guide OU to the 2007 Big 12 title.

Oklahoma is coming off its impressive 2013 NCAA national title run that saw the Sooners post a 57-4 record and capture both the Big 12 title and the Division I title. The Sooners have advanced to the Women's College World Series three straight years under Gasso, who was inducted into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2012.

OU is 13-6 this season, including a recent wins over 15th ranked Nebraska and a 35-1 drumming of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Shelby Pendley leads OU offensively, batting .429 with five home runs and 28 RBI. Destinee Martinez (.361, 17 runs, 13 RBI), Georgia Casey (.339, 5 HR, 15 RBI), and Javen Henson (.313, 2 HR, 9 RBI) are all batting over .300 on the season.

In the circle, Kelsey Stevens anchors the OU staff. Stevens is 8-3 on the season with a 2.48 earned run average. Leslie Miller (2-0, 3.32 ERA), Taylor Dewbery (2-0, 3.87 ERA) and Casey (1-2, 4.60 ERA) have also seen time in the circle for the Sooners this year.

Tech is led offensively by Kristen Miles (.346, 13 runs), Bianca Duran (.333, 5 doubles), Hailey Winter (.316, 2 HR, 6 RBI), and Tori Charters (.308, 6 runs), Pauline Tufi (.283, 12 RBI), Erin Kipp (.255, 9 runs, 6-7 SB), Janine Godwin (.231, 6 runs), Anna Cross (.229, 4 doubles, 2 HR, 12 RBI), Katelynn Hill (.226, 2 triples) and Alayna Kipp (.220, 3 HR, 14 RBI).

In the circle Tech will rely upon Duran, Tufi and Cross in a pitcher-by-committee approach.

Live stats will be available through at SoonerSports.com as well as a live video stream of the game (subscription-only).
