@LATechSB Opens C-USA Play at Middle Tennessee
March 9, 2018
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- After a challenging non-conference schedule that includes 11 games against teams currently ranked or receiving votes in this week's Top 25 polls, Louisiana Tech will open up Conference USA play this weekend with a three-game series at Middle Tennessee.
The action will include a double header set for Saturday at 2 p.m. and a single game set for Sunday at 12 p.m. Fans can access the free Louisiana Tech audio broadcast of the game through the Louisiana Tech X mobile app. A live video stream is also available with a paid subscription to CUSA.TV.
Tech (10-12) will face a Middle Tennessee (16-6) team that has surprised many during the first month of the season. Middle Tennessee was picked to finish 11th in the 12-team league but the Blue Raiders have proven that they will be highly competitive in the conference race this season.
As a team the Blue Raiders enters conference play leading C-USA in ERA (1.94), batting average (.321), and wins (16). Several Blue Raiders also top out the individual categories including Summer Burgess and Precious Birdsong. Burgess leads C-USA in batting average (.479) and hits (34) while Birdsong is first in runs per game (1.06).
In the circle, Middle Tennessee boasts three arms, including Cori Jennings (7-3, 1.74 ERA), Gretchen Greer (3-1, 1.92 ERA) and Amber Baldwin (5-2, 2.20 ERA). All three have made at least six starts this season and have logged at least 40 innings.
Head coach Mark Montgomery's team has been highly competitive in the most difficult non-conference schedule of any of the C-USA teams. Tech's 11 games vs. teams ranked or receiving votes in this week's Top 25 is by far the most of any C-USA team (Florida Atlantic is second with 8).
Tech is still looking to find its offensive groove as the Lady Techsters enter the weekend batting only .224 as a team with only 12 doubles and seven home runs. However, Tech has manufactured runs on the base paths with 48 stolen bases in 54 attempts.
In the circle, Tech enters the weekend with a staff that consists of Preslee Gallaway (5-4, 2.41 ERA), Jensen Howell (3-2, 3.50), Bailey Allen (2-1, 3.63 ERA), Krystal De La Cruz (0-5, 3.94 ERA) and Jenny Chapman (0-0, 1.40 ERA).
The Blue Raiders lead the all-time series 7-4, including winning two out of three in Ruston last season.
