RUSTON -- Louisiana Tech opens its 2009 Western Athletic Conference season Saturday at home when the Lady Techsters host Hawaii at 1 p.m. in a softball doubleheader at the Lady Techter Complex.
Tech (13-12) will also host the Rainbow Wahine (11-16) in a 3 p.m. single game on Sunday to conclude the three-game series.
The game will pit two of the top teams in the league as Hawaii was tabbed third in the preseason WAC poll while the Lady Techsters were picked to finish fourth. Both programs competed in the 2008 NCAA Tournament.
Hawaii is led offensively by Tanisha Milca (.386, 5 HR, 17 RBI) and Amanda Tauali'i (.359, 7 HR, 22 RBI) as the Rainbow Wahine are sporting a .244 team batting average. Hawaii does rank among the WAC leaders in home runs with 23.
In the circle, Hawaii has turned to a trio of freshmen led by Stephanie Ricketts (6-5, 2.32 ERA) who has logged the most innings on the staff while striking out 89 batters in 87.1 innings of work.
Junior Amberly Waits leads LA Tech at the plate, ranking as one of the WAC leaders in average (.462), home runs (7), RBI (31), and total bases (60). In addition to Waits, Danielle Sheridan (.288, 16 runs, 7 RBI) and Emma Barnes (.275, 16 runs, 5 SB) have also provided key contributions at the top of the order.
Hawaii leads the all-time series against LA Tech 22-4 although the Lady Techsters defeated the Rainbow Wahine 2-1 in the first game of the 2009 WAC Tournament in Honolulu.
