April 25, 2014

RUSTON - Louisiana Tech will host East Carolina this weekend in a three-game Conference USA softball series at the Lady Techster Softball Complex.

Saturday's doubleheader starts at 2 p.m. and will be the "Strike Out Cancer" games where players and coaches from both teams will play in honor of family and friends who have battled this terrible disease.

Sunday's single game will start at 12 p.m. Prior to the contest, Louisiana Tech centerfielder Katelynn Hill will be honored as part of the Senior Day ceremony for her contributions to the Lady Techster program the past four years.

Admission for both days is free.

In addition to the promotions surrounding the two days, the Lady Techsters (18-28, 6-11 C-USA) and Pirates (23-17, 10-8) are both fighting to qualify for the upcoming Conference USA Tournament in Boca Raton, Florida May 8-10.

With only the top eight out of 13 teams earning a spot in the three-day event, Louisiana Tech has an uphill battle over its final two league series; Tech ends the year with a three-game weekend at Marshall. The Lady Techsters are currently in 12th place but only trail eighth-place by three games with six remaining.

Tech enters the weekend after splitting a pair of midweek games, defeating Grambling State 10-1 and falling at Northwestern State 8-7.

Kristen Miles (.357, 31 runs, 7-9 SB), Pauline Tufi (.283, 4 HR, 32 RBI), Hailey Winter (.271, 2 HR, 14 RBI), Anna Cross (.270, 5 HR, 29 RBI, 8-10 SB), Tori Charters (.261, 6-7 SB), Janine Godwin (.255, 6 doubles, 9 RBI), Bianca Duran (.246, 9 doubles, 20 RBI) and Hill (.236, 11 RBI) are Tech's top offensive threats.

Tufi (13-8, 2.77 ERA) and Duran (5-17, 3.87 ERA) will handle the pitching responsibilities in the series.

East Carolina is one of the top offensive teams in Conference USA, boasting a .309 team batting average along with 41 home runs and 75 stolen bases.

Shelby Johnson (.363, 36 runs, 28-30 SB), Kristi Oshiro (.357, 30 runs, 5 HR, 27 RBI), Chelsea Kaluhiokalani-Glackin (.349, 24 runs, 13-19 SB), Jordan Lewis (.348, 10 HR, 37 RBI), Jill Jelnick (.333, 9 runs), Alex Fieldhouse (.304, 8 HR, 36 RBI), Abby Wynne (.296, 5 HR, 27 RBI) and Casey Alcorn (.282, 6 HR, 18 RBI) lead the potent offensive attack.

Sarah Christian (16-7, 2.86 ERA) is the ace of the ECU staff while Carolina Umphlett (6-5, 4.85) is the quality No. 2 for the Pirates.

Tech leads the all-time series 3-1 although the two programs haven't met since 1995.
