RUSTON - Three Louisiana Tech softball signees earned a spot on the 2014 Shreveport Times All-City Team released by the newspaper this past weekend.
Airline shortstop Katie Smith, Evangel pitcher Carolina Sanchez and North Caddo infielder Kassie Harris were a part of the 15-person team. Smith also earned the Player of the Year award while Sanchez was selected as the Pitcher of the Year.
Smith batted .438 for the Lady Vikings with 13 doubles, three home runs and 24 RBIs. However, Smith might have won the award more for her defense than her impressive offensive numbers as she possesses a rifle arm and great range.
"Coach Montgomery has given me some hints on what (position) I might play (at LA Tech)," Smith said in an interview with Jimmy Watson of the Times. "But I have to go over there and prove myself and work for it. It won't just be handed to me. I'm nervous, but excited."
Sanchez earned the Pitcher of the Year honor after leading Evangel to the Class 3A state quarterfinals. She was 17-9 on the year with a 1.68 earned run average. She recorded 176 strikeouts in 175 innings. She also led Evangel at the plate with a .382 average and six home runs.
Harris batted an impressive .590 on the season for North Caddo with two home runs and 22 RBI.
