Jan. 27, 2018
DENTON, Texas -- The Louisiana Tech women's tennis team fell in its first dual match of the 2018 spring season, losing 5-2 to Conference USA foe North Texas on the road on Saturday afternoon at the Waranch Tennis Complex.
LA Tech (0-1) won at No. 2 doubles but lost on the other two courts to drop the doubles point. North Texas (2-1) was able to pull out the win in its home opener with victories on courts one, two, four and six in singles.
"There was a lot of heart and effort on all courts today," head coach Amanda Stone said. "We implemented what we focused on in practice this week and executed well against a tough team. We will keep working and hope to bring the same kind of energy and play next weekend."
Having played together only once in the fall and just three times last season in dual matches, Sonia Chen and Nadja Manjon teamed up at the No. 2 spot and pulled out a 6-4 win over Nidhi Surapaneni and Sille Tranberg.
However, the Mean Green grabbed a 6-1 win on court one and a 6-2 win on court three to go up 1-0 in the dual match.
Freshman Claudia Oravcova was not only playing in her first career dual, but she was also playing at the top of the singles lineup. The Piestany, Slovakia native gave her opponent Tamuna Kutubidze a battle, but she ended up falling 6-4, 6-3.
Another freshman, Andrea Perez-Lopez, played at the No. 2 spot and dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Minying Liang which gave North Texas a 3-0 lead. The Mean Green were able to clinch the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 6 position.
Playing the matches out, the last three singles courts were all marathon matches. Manjon was able to give the Lady Techsters their first point of the day with a 7-5, 7-6 victory over Tranberg on court three.
The second point for LA Tech came from the final match where freshman Karla De La Luz Montalvo registered her first career dual win, outlasting Haruka Sasaki on court five with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory.
The Lady Techsters will return to action in a week when they travel to Lake Charles to take on in-state foe McNeese State on Saturday, Feb. 3. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
