RUSTON -- Louisiana Tech tennis picked up its first win of the season Friday at home against South Dakota State by a final score of 5-2.

"We played some good tennis today and our efforts paid off," Tech head tennis coach Quintin Yray said. "This was our first time competing against South Dakota State so we really didn't know what to expect. I'm very pleased to come away with a win. We will try and continue the streak with our match-up with Southern University next Friday which is another home match."

Winning their matches were senior Ada Makowska at the No. 2 spot (6-1; 6-0), sophomore Rocio Juarez at No. 4 (6-1; 6-1), sophomore Mallory Smith at No. 5 (6-2; 6-3) and freshman Laura Rodriguez at No. 6 (6-0; 6-1).

Tech swept the doubles' matches with the team of Makowska and senior Ashley Wedderburn winning 8-5, Juarez and freshman Maartje de Wit winning 8-1 and Smith and Rodriguez winning 8-6.

"We were pleasantly surprised to win all the doubles matches with Rocio and Maartje really playing well," Yray said. "I believe they lost the first game but then won the next eight games in a row. Today we won 7 out of 9 matches, four singles matches and the three doubles matches. Again, it was just another day at the office for Makowska in her spot. She just overwhelmed her opponent only giving up one game. In the No. 4 spot, Juarez was the first to finish off her opponent only dropping 2 games. She has also been on a roll. In the No. 5 and No. 6 spots Mallory Smith and Laura Rodriquez also had very little trouble closing out their matches."

The Techsters return to action Friday, March 6 at home against Southern University at 12 p.m. at the Lady Techster Tennis Complex.
