BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB came out and swept all three doubles matches to get the early advantage, but Louisiana Tech fought back with five wins at singles to take the 5-2 victory on Sunday afternoon and sweep the weekend matches versus conference opponents.
It marked the second time in the last three matches that LA Tech (8-1, 3-0 C-USA) dropped the doubles point and responded with its depth in singles.
"We came out slow today," said head coach Chad Camper. "You have to give credit to UAB who came out fighting and it was hard to keep up. UAB is a good young team like us so we had to find a way to get ahead. The women were forced to play from behind and some of their best tennis came out later on.
"Everyone stepped up and Melanie showed great leadership in fighting her way to a great victory. We will now take off for a few days to rest and then will get back to work."
UAB (4-7, 0-3 C-USA) delivered wins of 8-6, 8-6 and 8-4 in doubles, the first time the Lady Techsters have dropped all three in the same match this season.
However, for the second straight day, Manoela Chiacchio delivered a dominating performance at No. 6 to notch the first singles point for LA Tech.
Jazmin Britos continued her incredible streak of 8-0 to start her freshman spring season, winning handily 6-2, 6-0.
The Techsters pulled ahead 3-1 in the match after Joanna Nalborska won her seventh straight, a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 2.
The clincher then came from Alexandra Starkova who rebounded from dropping the first set to take it, 5-7, 6-3, 6-0.
UAB's lone singles point came at the No. 3 position with Pardis Kianoush besting Marta Sramkova.
The marathon match of the day was at No. 5 where Melanie Urvoy outlasted the Blazers Elaine Simon, 2-6, 7-5, 7-5.
LA Tech returns to the courts on Saturday, March 8 in Houston, Texas where they will take on Tyler Junior College to begin four matches in four days.
