RUSTON - The Louisiana Tech tennis team cruised to its second straight win as they defeated Southern 6-1 on Saturday evening at the LA Tech Tennis Complex.

In the two previous wins, LA Tech (3-3) had pulled out the doubles point, and that was the case versus Southern (5-6).

"It was a nice day at our tennis complex," said head coach Freddy Gomez. "We had a lot of fans come out today. Although we had a strange time getting going in terms of finishing points and creating a lead in doubles, the team was able to adjust well."

Melanie Urvoy and Taly Merker teamed up for their first match of the season from the No. 1 spot, and came away with the 8-5 win against Gabrielle Moore and Lois Alexis.

The new freshmen duo of Joanna Nalborska and Alexandra Starkova joined forces to compete in and win their first collegiate match, an 8-2 decision over Morgan Taylor and Camara Davis.

The two carried that moment over to singles where each tallied straight set wins, Starkova with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at the No. 2 spot and Nalborska with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the No. 3 spot.

"I was glad to see our two new freshmen take on their first collegiate matches, and see the team become even more of a team with this match," said Gomez.

Vivian ten Dolle, Manoela Chiacchio and Alena Erofeyeva also scored straight set wins as well with the Lady Techsters taking five of the six singles matches.

The win by Erofeyeva was her first of the season.

LA Tech will return to the courts Sunday, March 10 as they host Grambling State at 1 p.m.
