SAN JOSE, Calif. - In the first conference match of the season, the Louisiana Tech tennis team held on for a 4-3 win over Texas State on Thursday evening at the Spartan Tennis Complex.
LA Tech (6-3, 1-0 WAC) extended its winning streak to five games after notching its first conference win since April 10, 2010 when they defeated San Jose State 5-2 in Ruston.
The Lady Techsters came out of the gates strong, sweeping all three doubles matches and quickly grabbing singles wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.
Freshmen Alexandra Starkova and Joanna Nalborska accounted for all three points, first teaming up to win 8-2 over Monica Pieratt and Berenice Van Den Bergh to go along with the 8-4 victory by Taly Merker and Melanie Urvoy and the 7-6 (7-2) victory by Vivian ten Dolle and Manoela Chiacchio
Starkova then defeated Melissa Hadad 6-1, 6-2 followed by Naborka's straight sets win over Pieratt 6-1, 7-5.
Texas State (4-5, 1-1 WAC) would not go away quietly though as the Bobcats clawed back by winning three points at the No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 spots before LA Tech's Chiacchio sealed the WAC opening victory at the No. 6 singles with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win over Van Den Bergh.
"We started off the match very much in control, but give a lot of credit to Texas State who fought back really hard today and played a great match," said head coach Freddy Gomez. "We know each team here is hard to play against. However, I see our team taking the opportunity to prove itself and edge our competition. We just have to continue to learn from every match and experience."
