RUSTON, La. - In their first game back home in over three weeks, the Louisiana Tech tennis team swept Grambling 7-0 Tuesday night at the Lady Techster Tennis Complex.
"The team played better than the first time we faced Grambling back in January," said head coach Quintin Yray.
The Lady Techsters improve 11-4 on the year while the Tigers drop to 3-6.
Tech started the match up 1-0 and needing to win only one doubles match to get the point as Grambling only brought five players to the competition.
Seniors Elne Barnard and Anna Zurek easily handled Alicia Shaw and Gina Stephenson 8-0 at No.1 doubles to put the Lady Techsters up 2-0. At No. 2, senior Maartje de Wit and junior Vivian ten Dolle followed with an 8-2 win over Char Wetherill and former Tech player Laura Rodriguez to complete the doubles sweep.
Ten Dolle began singles play by easily taking care of Stephenson at the No. 2 position (6-0, 6-0). Barnard then clinched the match for the Lady Techsters by defeating Wetherill (6-1, 6-1).
At the No. 5 spot, Zurek beat Tee Kassin (6-2, 6-1) in two sets while junior Alena Erofeyeva increased her singles record to 14-1 in the spring with a win over Shaw (6-4, 6-2).
The match of the night saw freshman Laura Fernandez battle Rodriguez at the No. 1 position. Both players traded the lead in the first set until Rodriguez tied the match 6-6 to force a tie-breaker that Fernandez won 7-3. The second set saw Fernandez go up 4-1 before the competitors split the last four points as Fernandez came out victorious 6-3.
Louisiana Tech returns to action on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. at the Lady Techster Tennis Complex as they take on Stephen F. Austin.
