Makowska Stays Hot in Road Finale
April 7, 2008 RUSTON, La. - The Louisiana Tech tennis team lost its final two road matches of the regular season this weekend at Harding and Central Arkansas. However, junior Ada Makowska kept her racket hot getting two more wins. Makowska has now won six of her last seven singles matches for Tech (3-16). She got her first win of the weekend Saturday at Harding against Lola Pardo edging her in three sets 6-2, 3-6, 10-8. The third set was a 10-point quick set as team match results had been decided. She followed that win with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Heidi Miller from UCA on Sunday. As a team, Tech could not keep up with their opponents falling 8-1 to Harding and 5-2 against UCA. Harding is ranked No. 5 in the Division II South Region. The Lady Bison (19-2) win over the Techsters extended their school winning streak to 17 matches. The Lady Bears (2-12) got their second win of the season. Against UCA, Ashley Wedderburn battled with Petra Keilova in the No. 1 position before falling 6-3, 6-2. Rocio Juarez won the first set 6-3 over Rebecca Miller and trailed the second 1-4 when the match was retired to get the win. Mallory Smith lost in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 to Lisa Mainz, and Carolina Pachon fell 6-0, 6-3 to Lindsey Short. In doubles against the Lady Bears, the team of Rocio and Smith lost 8-3 to Mainz and Miller. Wedderburn and Makowska fell by the same score to Keilova and Jordan Short. In the match against Harding, Tech nearly took points in the doubles competition losing both matches played 8-6. Juarez and Pachon fell to Alicia Williams and Karina Gomes, and the team of Pardo and Katherine Golik bested Wedderburn and Makowska. Juarez battled with Gomes in the No. 2 singles match to be edged out 6-0, 1-6, 10-4. Tech lost in straight sets in the other singles matches with Smith pushing Golik to 7-6 in the first set before losing the second 6-2. Wedderburn fell 6-1, 6-1 to Williams in the No. 1 singles match, and Pachon lost 6-1, 6-2 to Katy Turnbow. Tech will finish the regular season against Grambling State at the Ruston Municipal Courts on Friday at a time to be determined. Then, the Techsters will head to the Western Athletic Conference Championship in Las Cruces, N.M., beginning April 24. |
