RUSTON -- The Louisiana Tech tennis team notched their second shutout of the weekend as the Lady Techsters overpowered Alcorn State, 7-0 on Sunday evening in the regular season finale at the Louisiana Tech Tennis Complex.
LA Tech (14-4, 7-1) ran its winning streak to eight games and winners of 13 of its last 14 overall, wrapping up an historic season for the program.
"I'm happy that we came out and competed well," said head coach Freddy Gomez. I'm very proud of each of the players for working hard mentally and staying in every match even though we felt like we had an advantage coming in.
"I'm very happy with the regular season and how everything has gone so far. It is a good start in building a program. We just have to continue to get even better now."
The top two doubles lineups for the Techsters notched quick wins of 8-3 and 8-1 en route to the doubles point.
Alexandra Starkova then made the match 2-0 in a defeat of Alcorn State's Arielie Buchmann 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 2 position.
Seconds later, Joanna Nalborska claimed the second singles win for LA Tech at No. 1 with a 6-4, 6-1 win against the Lady Braves' Kersten Vanem. Nalborska battled back from being 4-3 in the first set to cruise to the straight sets victory.
The match clincher came from the No. 4 court when Taly Merker breezed to a 6-2, 6-1 win against ASU's Kate Potapova.
LA Tech now sets its sights on the WAC Tournament hosted by the University of Denver at the Gates Tennis Center in Denver, Colo.
"I think it is going to be very important that we continue to get stronger in doubles," said Gomez. "The doubles point will be huge for us. We will keep working on that before we go to Denver."
The Lady Techsters will be either the No. 2 or No. 3 seed, depending on results from WAC matches this weekend.
