Chen Takes Singles Flight Title at Warhawk Invitational

MONROE – For the third straight year, the Louisiana Tech women’s tennis team opened up its fall season at the Warhawk Invitational and for a third straight year Sonia Chen took home a singles flight championship.
The junior from Taichung, Taiwan breezed through her first two matches with wins of 6-1, 6-0 and 6-3, 6-0 in route to the championship of flight two.
She then had to go the distance and win in a third set super breaker over Phonexay Chitdara of McNeese State 5-7, 6-2, (10-8) at Raymond Heard Stadium on Saturday evening.
Playing in her first tournament as a Lady Techster, freshman Claudia Oravcova picked up two singles victories, including a 6-4, 2-6, (10-6) win versus Nida Kamal (SFA) to place third in flight three.
Also in that flight, senior Angela Lorenzo snagged two wins to claim the back draw title. She too split the first two sets and won the third set super breaker, 10-1, to defeat Teodroa Radu of ULM.
The other win of the tourney came from freshman Paulina Cota who registered her first collegiate win, beating Clara Rizea (ULM) by a final score of 6-3, 6-0.
All three doubles teams for LA Tech won at least one match. The duo of sophomore Nadja Manjon and Oravcova was runner-up of flight one with wins over Payne/Tiboldi (SFA), 6-1, and Mastilovic/Erlandsson (McNeese State), 7-6, before falling in the finals.
LA Tech will return to the courts in two weeks when they travel to Waco, Texas to participate in the Under Armour/HEB Invitational, hosted by Baylor on Oct. 6-8.
