LAFAYETTE, La. - Senior Maartje de Witt (Velp, Netherlands) finished third overall in Flight "B1" as the Louisiana Tech tennis team competed in the Ragin' Cajun Women's Tennis Classic in Lafayette this weekend. In the first round of the lower bracket of Flight "B1", de Wit beat Frances Askew of Southern Miss 6-1, 6-2 but fell to Diana Pirciu of McNeese State 6-0, 6-3 in the semifinals. In the third place match of the lower bracket, de Wit defeated the Lady Cowgirls' Marcella Castaldi 7-5, 6-4. The final match of the invitational for de Wit was a 6-0, 6-0 win over Alessandra Pennesi of Lamar for third place overall of Flight "B1." De Wit wasn't the only Lady Techster to place overall in a Flight as freshman Laura Fernandez (Madrid, Spain) finished in fifth place overall of Flight "A1." After falling to Aline Volman of South Alabama in the first round of the lower bracket of Flight "A1," Fernandez won her consolation semi-finals match by default and defeated McNeese State's Tea Tvrtkovic 6-2, 6-1 for fifth place in the lower bracket of Flight "A1." With a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Ramona Ghermani of South Alabama, Fernandez clinched fifth place overall in the flight. "Fernandez played some great tennis over the weekend," said head coach Quintin Yray. "Unforunately in her first round she ran into a very good player in Aline Volman of South Alabama. She then found her game and defated some very good opponents and topped it off with a win of South Alabama's Ramona Ghermani." Junior Alena Erofeyeva (Yekaterinburg, Russia) fell in her first two matches, but finished the invitational with a 2-2 record including a 6-4, 6-2 win over Kate Lanier of USM in a third versus seventh place match of the lower bracket of Flight "A2."
"Erofeyeva was moved to a higher bracket and beat some good opponents this weekend and has been playing a lot better over the last two weeks," Yray said. In doubles action, the duos of junior Vivian ten Dolle (Gelderland, Netherlands) and de Wit and Erofeyeva and Fernandez both finished with 1-3 records. Tech continues their fall schedule at the two-day Apache Invitie in Tyler, Texas on Friday and Saturday.
