Oct. 22, 2017
AUBURN, Ala. – For the second time in three years, Louisiana Tech junior Sonia Chen became the women’s tennis champion of the Singles B Draw at the prestigious ITA Southern Regional Championships on the campus of Auburn University.
Chen, who also won the title as a freshman, started the event winning in straight sets in the round of 16. She then had to outlast her next two opponents, besting Christina Sisti (Tulane) 6-7, 6-2, 1-0 (8) and Madlaina Grigoriu (ULM) 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (8) to reach the championship on Sunday.
In the title game, the Taiwan native cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Sophie Dodds of UAB. In three fall season of playing in the highly competitive event, Chen has a combined singles record of 12-1.
“Overall, I’m very happy with how we competed this weekend,” head coach Amanda Stone said. “We had some great individual highlights. Sonia and Karla knocked off a tough Alabama team in doubles, Angela went toe-to-toe with Auburn and Sonia stayed strong all weekend in singles to claim the title.
“Every time out, we are getting better and to ourselves that we can play at a high level. Once we start truly believing it, I think things will really start clicking.”
Chen was also impressive in doubles with her partner freshman Karla De La Luz Montalvo. The duo nearly pulled off a huge upset in the round of 32 of the A Draw, ultimately falling to the No. 2 seed from Auburn Russo/Meredith by a final score of 8-5. Russo is currently part of the No. 2 ranked doubles team in the country by the ITA.
The duo did some damage in the back draw though, overpowering Grigoriu/Salnero (ULM) 8-1 and shocking Selim/Cortina-Pou of Alabama with an 8-6 victory before falling in the semifinals.
Also having an impressive showing at the tournament was senior Angela Lorenzo. She had the lone LA Tech singles win in the A draw, downing Anja Luethi of New Orleans in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
The Spanish native played incredible in the round of 32, giving Taylor Russo of Auburn who is currently ranked No. 60 in the nation by the ITA all she could handle. Lorenzo ended up falling in three sets though, 6-0, 5-7, 6-3.
The Lady Techsters will close out their fall season next weekend on Oct. 28-29 at the Bearkat Invitational in Huntsville, Texas.
